Prep Volleyball Roundup: Lady Chiefs down River Ridge in three

After splitting the first two games, the Sequoyah Lady Chiefs battled their way to a 25-18, 18-25, 25-19 over rival River Ridge Aug. 20 in Hickory Flat.

The Lady Chiefs (6-2) dropped their other bout of the night, falling to Johns Creek in two.

Sophomore Kali Jones (18 kills, 12 digs), senior Logan Page (32 assists, 20 digs, seven kills) and sophomores Kelley Hartman (seven kills, 5.5 blocks) and Lauren Hartman (five kills, six blocks) led the attack, while junior Kayla Morris (15 digs, four assists) and senior Jensyn Wells (14 digs) helped pace the defensive effort.

Lady Eagles off to quick start

Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Lucco racked up 40 kills and 20 aces over seven matches and the Etowah Lady Eagles went 5-2 for the week, improving their early-season mark to 9-3.

Starting the week on the road, the Lady Eagles knocked off Riverwood and Parkview in two games each on Aug. 20 at Riverwood, before returning home to oust Allatoona 25-13, 25-22, 25-23 in a best-of-five bout on Aug. 22. Etowah then capped its week with a play date at North Cobb on Saturday, rebounding from losses to Starr’s Mill and North Gwinnett to topple Norcross 25-19, 25-23 and reigning Class AAAA state champion Sandy Creek 25-11, 25-22.

Complementing Lucco, who was a perfect 25-for-25 from the service line against Allatoona, Jenna Lea and Taylor Kimber (18 blocks) knocked down 29 and a 21 kills, respectively, for the week, while Sydney Hotaling tallied 92 assists, Allie Elson picked up 49 digs and Madeline Gilmer totaled 29 digs.

Kylie Blanton (eight blocks) and Paige Horton (two blocks) had 10 kills each Saturday.
