After a five-hour closed session in the midst of a called meeting April 30, the Cherokee County Resource Recovery Development Authority and Cherokee County Board of Commissioners voted at 10 p.m. that evening to lease/purchase the Ball Ground Recycling Plant to Cowart Mulch for $3 million. Cowart’s lease takes effect May 1.

Even though the little City of Ball Ground might look like a rough 1980s Arkansas town in May during the filming of the Tom Cruise movie, “Mena,” the Anetsa Ga-Da Garden Club has an eye on the town’s long-term appearance, and is assembling hanging baskets to place along the streets after the movie crews clean up and leave town.

• Sequoyah High School Advanced Placement and Honors Spanish teacher Allison Webb has won a scholarship for summer study awarded by the Southern Conference On Language Training. She will be studying Andean culture and literature at the Academia Latinoamericana de Español in Cuzco, Peru. Webb is only one of four Spanish teachers to be awarded this scholarship this year. Recipients must teach in grades 11 or 12 or at the college level, and the scholarship recipients receive a two-week Spanish immersion experience, including a home stay. In addition, recipients receive four hours of instruction each day in indigenous Andean culture and regional literature. Webb will be in Cuzco for the summer study from July 5-18. During her stay, Mrs. Webb will prepare a YouTube video to share her experiences with Spanish students and teachers.
