Task force earns high honor
The Georgia Commission on Family Violence awarded the Cherokee Domestic Violence Task Force with the Task Force of the Year Award during its annual conference. This award recognizes a local group that provides innovative, coordinated community responses to family violence. The Cherokee Domestic Violence Task Force has been working to end violence in the home since 1992 and includes members from the local shelter, felony and misdemeanor prosecution and probation, the local sexual assault center, law enforcement, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, counseling agencies, survivors of domestic violence and more.
“The Task Force has made a concerted effort to reach out to the faith community in Cherokee. This is crucial, as many victims and perpetrators will never reach out to the criminal justice system or domestic violence agency,” said Greg Loughlin, director of the Commission on Family Violence. “The Cherokee Domestic Violence Task Force is a leader in their community and the state on domestic violence prevention and intervention.”
Police warn of scam
The Woodstock Police Department is alerting citizens of a traffic light camera citation scam, in which a fictitious officer threatens recourse in order to obtain the victim’s information.
According to Woodstock Ofc. Brittany Duncan, public information officer, the perpetrator requests the victim’s credit card information (including the security code) billing address, date of birth and Social Security number in an attempt to compromise the victim’s identity. The Woodstock Police Department, the city and Cherokee County do not utilize any form of traffic light enforcement cameras. Duncan said at no time will an officer ever ask to secure payment for any outstanding citations.
