Detectives with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office are investigating vandalism at a local cemetery.

Deputies responded to a report of vandalism at the cemetery at Indian Knoll Baptist Church on Ga. 140 near Avery Road Feb. 23.

A man had been visiting a family member’s gravesite when he noticed several headstones overturned, the report said. He called the church deacon, who, in turn, called police.

About 15 headstones had been pushed off their bases and were laying on the ground, the report said. The perpetrators allegedly smashed about 10 marble vases, shattering them into pieces.

The deputy also noticed that flowers that had been on graves were strewn about the property, the report said.

Police believe the vandalism occurred sometime between Feb. 16 and Feb. 21, according to Lt. Jay Baker, public information officer for the sheriff’s office.

While detectives currently have no leads, they believe teens could have been responsible for the vandalism, Baker said.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at (770) 928-0239.
